Another feel good story about hearing aids (with apologies for having to deal with the commercial before getting to feature)...
Making a difference...
Special... Legally deaf since birth...
Hearing impaired...
Ba-ba-ba-ba...
Kinda like a new shoe...
Louder... Annoying... Overwhelming...
800,000 people...
Out of the darkness... Come alive...
Sarcasm aside, this story shows the diversity of deafness. We can be happy for the people who want to be helped in this fashion. But we need to be weary of this representation that smacks of the deficit model of deafness.
Loss of hearing can become dangerous when you’re unable to detect nearby hazards, and can affect your sense of independence and security. It is important to remember that each individual has a unique hearing loss. It is important to understand that although hearing aids can be a tremendous help to patients, no hearing aid can restore normal hearing. To be tested and fitted for a hearing aid, contact a local hearing specialist.
